Katherine is one of those lovely, rare woman with beauty exuding inside and out, awe inspiring. A compassionate heart with a passion for serving others and the coolest style. Combo is Tres Beau!

ps check out Katherine’s chic blog Bullet with Butterfly Wings.

“I am a proprietor of eccentricities, oddities and taste. Also a stylist and writer and maker of things.”

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

I was fortunate enough to work with Carrie on a photoshoot and we immediately connected. My Style Statement session was an interesting experience as we both work in the “style” field. But the approach and process was much more intuitive and organic than what I’m used to in my practice.

What was the first experience that reflected your Style Statement?

I think it was a thought rather than an experience, and something very pure and simple. But it was reflecting upon my words and realizing that in Modern Feminine, I am drawn towards simplicity and clean lines. Although I understand my style very well, I always thought I was drawn to things more elaborate and interesting, yet in my closet and day to day what I feel best in is the luxurious basics I own.

Is there a specific event, goal, or desire you’re applying your Style Statement to?

I wouldn’t say an event, the part of my Style Statement that is most important is to integrate Modern Feminine into my life and trust my own intuition. It is a essential part of me, and I want to embrace it.

What does your Style Statement mean to you?

It was very interesting receiving my two words. Carrie told me one’s second is often more challenging, and for me oh so true. I always had this marked idea of what “Feminine” was, and I suppose in some ways avoided that. Yet, rephrasing what feminine is was an interesting experience in challenging my own set of beliefs and reformulating them. That was the most meaningful part to my Style Statement.

How has your Style Statement been useful to you? How do you apply it to your life?

I have been able to focus in on what “style” means to me, and maintain a clearer picture of this what looks like for me. Be it based on my clothes – wearing jeans and a tee or out for a day of shopping. Not getting lured into all the glitz and amusement my head might be tempted by. More than anything it’s another level of awareness and a different perspective I think is great to explore.

What do you like to be noticed and appreciated for?

I like to be noticed most for my artistry and chic-ness. My brain and my generosity.

What inspires you? How do you know when you’re inspired?

I’m inspired if I DO. Suddenly life happen with a little more ease. Anything really has the possibility to inspire me. It can be a smell, a color, a thought.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Now this is very challenging, but I think if I were to only be able to wear one outfit it would be a great pair of jeans, Ann Demeulemeester boots, a Raquel Allegra tee and a blazer.

Describe your dream home?

Just one?! There are different dream homes floating in my head. Different ones for different ocassions. Most definitely is a tropical beach house where all the windows remain open and I can hear the ocean and the wind.

How do you play?

How do I play…hmm I think probably gathering my friends. Feasting, laughing. And my dog Sarge. These are all my play. Oh, and dance parties in my living room. I’m the only guest.

Three Books That Have Inspired You?

I could never narrow down my list. Books are my input , I read so much, they all contribute to my being me.

10 Things that you love…

Music specifically the classics. (by classics I mean rock)

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

I loved the experience of my Style Statement session, I loved answering probing questions. I was surprisingly moved with the end result: Elegant Invitation. I cried!

Is there a specific event, goal, or desire you’re applying your Style Statement to?

We just bought a new house. I’m using it to create the mood of my home. I want people to feel welcome (invited) in my house but I also like a certain level of minimalism.

What does your Style Statement mean to you?

I think I am more elegant than I thought. I certainly have elegant taste! I also know I am more inviting than I think, certainly in conversation, in social settings. But I also cherish privacy and alone time. I am rarely alone with a husband, 2 teenagers and 2 cats in my home. In work I want everything I present to the public to be elegant but always an invitation to work with me as well. Often, the 2 words seem to be opposites of each other.

How has your Style Statement been useful to you? How do you apply it to your life?

I use it in branding myself as a realtor, from photos of me in a classic white shirt and silver earrings to my web site which has elegant font and the invitation to visit and learn about all things real estate.

I drive a 1999 Mercedes (not too new and flashy but always an elegant brand!)

I favour clothes in neutral colours and classic lines, styles that are everlasting, like high waisted trousers that Katherine Hepburn always wore. If only I could find a pair!!

What do you like to be noticed and appreciated for?

I like to be noticed for a beautiful garden. I like to be appreciated for caring for my clients.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by wonderful writing. I know I am inspired when I say “WOW” or I cry. Total opposites I know.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The one outfit I would wear for the rest of my life would be super comfy, really flattering jeans, a tight white T-shirt and ked runners, no socks.

Describe your dream home?

My dream home is on the ocean with a huge deck on the front and a beautiful garden in the back. It would be post and beam with windows all across the front. And it would be LEED certified with solar panels and water barrels and all the other attributes that make it super energy efficient.

How do you play?

I don’t know if I do. At least not lately. I work, I work out, I work at home cleaning up. A week away is playful. Shopping with my girl friends mid week, mid day is play because I feel like I am playing hookie!

Carol is proud to be a daughter, sister, mother, wife, friend, designer, and entrepreneur. She lives on the east coast of Vancouver Island overlooking the Hunt Valley. Her Style Statement is Genuine Serenity.

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

Style Statement kept coming up for me. I heard about it through a friend, who heard about it from her friend’s friend. Sounded great but I didn’t have enough information to explore further. Then six months later, I received Carrie’s book, Style Statement as a gift from my best friend, she knew I would love it and I did. A year later, I gifted a session for a friend who was in the process of healing. Finally, a gift for myself and what a wonderful phone session I had with Carrie.

After narrowing down all my “possible words” from the workbook, I could have “self talked” myself out of my picks. My session with Carrie confirmed my words Genuine & Serenity, I was confident and excited to view the world through my new lenses.

What was the first experience that reflected your Style Statement?

My ahah moment occured when I heard myself say, “I needed to escape” some times to balance out the demands in my busy life. I always felt guilty sneaking into my claw foot tub for a blissful soak and hiding Epsom salts and my favourite body lotion under my robe. I loved that Serenity was exactly what I needed to keep the two-headed monster at-bay.

Is there a specific event, goal, or desire you’re applying your Style Statement to?

Yes – we have just purchased a smallholding in the Hunt Valley and have this wonderful opportunity to renovate according to Genuine Serenity (sorry, Honey!). Our new home has great “bones” with solid wood beams, hardwood floors and local stone feature walls and fireplace, Genuine. Positioned in a pastoral setting with room to grow my dream garden, Serenity.

What inspires you?

People inspire me. I love learning about other’s hopes and dreams. I am so fortunate as a graphic designer and entrepreneur to collaborate with authentic and amazing people helping turn dreams into reality.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I love my suits but forever? I have to say, my gardening clothes: jeans and a black v-neck tee with my defunct hiking boots (worn with a pair of my husbands work socks because my own pair are never as comfy), my rubber finger coated cotton gloves and my “washed out of shape” purple baseball cap.

How do you play?

I love to “play” in the kitchen and garden. As a family, we go on long bicycle trips Sunday afternoons. I play by myself by stealing away into the back corners of second hand bookstores.

Three Books That Have Inspired You

1) The Style Statement – of course!

2) Living a Beautiful Life Together by Alexandra Stoddard

3) The Not So Big Life by Sarah Susanka.

10 Things you love…

Hand made wooden products

Worn-in leather chairs

Vintage dress forms

My cast iron frying pans

people who can laugh at themselves,

Things woven or knitted

Top stitching.

Red leather gloves

The smell of pink grapefruit

10. Black & White photograph

You have $500 to spend on whatever you want. What would it be?

Definitely goes toward my new heated floor budget.

Carla is in search of all things beautiful, here to form meaningful connections, and always on on the look- out for those yummy moments where love rushes in.

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

I was so impressed with my session! As much as I was excited to find out what my two words were, I totally enjoyed the process of getting there. The questions were great, I mean how often do you get the chance to consider what you’re drawn to, and what feels right for you. Getting your Style Statement creates the perfect opportunity to be truly honest and to dig deep.

What was the first experience that reflected your Style Statement?

I had pulled together my wedding look before I had my Style Statement done but in retrospect, it’s the perfect example of “Tailored Ease.” The shape of my dress is well defined and tightly constructed – but I also knew that I wanted to complete the look with something different, something more playful. For jewelry, I selected a long chain with a heart pendant crafted in a brushed metal finish. It seemed like a more ‘relaxed’, fun choice, more whimsical to go with a very classic look.

Is there a specific event, goal, or desire you’re applying your Style Statement to?

My business partner and I are currently working on a business concept and plan. She had her Style Statement done so we’re looking at ways where we can apply our Style Statements in the decisions we make. It’s also helped me learn more about her- what motivates and inspires her.

What does your Style Statement mean to you? How do you interpret your first and second words?

I think of my Style Statement as a snap shot or headline representing the essence of me. It serves as both a reminder and a guidepost – helping me stay true to who I am and also acting as a guide in day to day living.

Tailored- classic, detailed, exclusive, innovative, perfectly fitted, precise, refined, strategic, quality.

Ease - calm, comforting, happiness, beauty, playful, quietness, spirit.

How has your Style Statement been useful to you?

It’s been useful from guiding major career decisions/direction to planning my wedding, to building my wardrobe.

What do you like to be noticed and appreciated for?

For being strategic, for being calm and for staying focused on the things that matter like cultivating compassion and kindness.

What inspires you?

Agents of change, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, cultural learning and exchanges, great conversations, books, art, film, travel, my four legged sage Elliot, my parents and anyone who is truly open minded and open hearted.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Comfy old jeans, a cashmere knit, sandals and chunky jewelry. (or anything the lovely Carolyn Bessett Kennedy wore)

Describe your dream home?

By the ocean, high ceilings, minimalistic, walls full of photographs of family, friends, travels and loads of bookshelves with loads of books.

How do you play?

Games night with the girls, play dates with my David & my Elliot and dancing, dancing, dancing.

Five Books That Have Inspired You?

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

Eat, Pray, Love

The Art of Happiness

The Prophet

Race Against Time

Janette is a full-time mama working on the art of living a creative life. Music industry and copy writer chica prior to motherhood.

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

I began with reading Carrie’s book, Style Statement. Amazingly, I came to Wonder as a contender for my 20% word – Enchantment, Delight, Evocation were also possibilities. The foundation word I considered was Composed, which wasn’t sitting right with me, although there were elements of Composed I related - orchestrating a party, creating vignettes around the house. As I worked through the book, I lived in chaos, the contents of two households crammed into one. I was finding “order” and “organization” coming up in almost every category of the Lifestyle Map. But once the clutter was gone and order restored to my surroundings, the importance of organization decreased dramatically and Composed didn’t fit. I scheduled a Jump-start session with Carrie, it made all the difference.

After about five questions (I think it was, “What one outfit would you wear for the rest of your life?” that sealed the deal) Carrie said, “Yeah, I don’t think you’re Composed.” And I laughed because I realized how NOT composed I am. And when she declared Wonder was my 20% word, it felt so right, she pointed out so many ways that I had not considered applying Wonder. It felt magical.

What does your Style Statement mean to you?

It’s freedom to be and embrace who I am. I now understand my love and tendency towards ‘other’ and ‘different,’ and how it isn’t based on getting attention or attempting to be unique. It’s my Wonder being joyful in the world and my Cosmopolitan which needs to check out new ideas and philosophies, to give a fair hearing. It’s also present in my decision to ‘unschool’ my little guy.

How do you interpret your first and second words?

Cosmopolitan - Yes, I’m a city girl, but the city I love is delightfully full of strangeness (Wonder). I like graffiti and Spanish billboards, a three legged dog at the barber shop, and picking up a six pack at the place everyone calls, The Dairy.

Wonder – as in thinking, figuring things out, pondering, NOT knowing and also of being amazed. Wonder is so important in my life… I need it in my surroundings and create it in the packages I wrap and the cards I make, the strange little short stories I wrote when I was younger. I seek it out in the world – on a desert highway or in trying to understand another’s point of view. Wonder awes. And until my conversation with Carrie, I didn’t realize how important it is to me… and how I yearn for it.

How has your Style Statement been useful to you? How do you apply it to your life?

We need to buy a couch. My Style Statement is telling me that the chesterfield with the India ink paisley fabric is not the one. Full of Wonder, yup, but my foundation word is Cosmopolitan, this is the direction I’ll be looking. I find Wonder is ever changing… Wonder draws me to many different places. A couch… I want stability in a couch. A couch that will be there for me through the antlers stenciled on the wall and the Moroccan lanterns. Yeah, we’re going to be looking for a Cosmopolitan couch!

Also, finally I understand why I dislike dressing for winter. Winter clothes bore me – or mine do. I don’t wear accessories, and realized the reason is my clothes come with the accessories built in… a ruffle, shorts that are bloomers, or a print dress. Because my winter clothing doesn’t come with these built in details, I feel blah and not at all myself ALL WINTER LONG. This also explains why I cut my hair in the winter and let it grow the rest of the year… a cool hair cut gives me a sense of style.

My Style Statement is a beacon keeping me true to myself amid the clutter of images and products out there.

What do you like to be noticed and appreciated for?

My creative efforts. Bravery and the chances I’ve taken in life – my determination to step off the safe path, even if it scares the dickens out of me.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by visuals. A color, a menu font, an abandoned claim shack in the desert, a pattern I might notice in the bark of a tree, office supplies, festive decorations, any place with mystery. I know I’m inspired when my breath becomes shallow, I know this is a sign for me to slow down and pay attention to what is speaking to me or conversely, I must hurry up and take note before the moment slips by.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Above-the-knee skirt, probably with a ruffle or some sort, cute and funky red platforms, an empire coat with a great print or embroidery. I’d be happy, every day.

Describe your dream home?

I have two dream homes. A Spanish-Moorish abode… with plaster walls, cool tile floors. A courtyard in the middle with a fountain would be perfect. And hallways that need to be wandered.

The other, a mid-century modern in the Mojave Desert. There is something so oddly right about those mod little houses sitting on the barren expanse of the desert; the sky you can’t hide from and all those windows to let it in whether you like it or not. It’s a strange serenity.

How do you play?

I doodle. With scraps of paper, old packaging, candy wrappers, Indian print blocks and stencils. I plot my homemade Christmas cards each year for months. I wrap gifts and turn them into collages of cork and Loteria cards, any little ephemera I have on hand. The Mexican shops on Olvera Street (LA’s first street) are great for supplies as well as inspiration. I adore a great shelter magazine, a bowl of frozen berries, and my (faux) Barcelona chair, preferably all at the same time. I love travel & discovery. And I spend a lot of time on swings with my six year old son.

10 Things you love… related to your two words, images are welcome.

The desert

Papel Picado (Mexican tissue paper party banners)

Eames fiberglass rocker

A candle lit courtyard

Bouganvilla

1920s Paris

Chandeliers

A great, funky coat

The Dosoduro East neighborhood of Venice

Dogs

“The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are,” – Joseph Campbell.

I live in Vancouver with my amazing partner and our two dogs. I’m excited about a business I’m starting soon with my girlfriend. I’m a believer in freedom, kindness, respect, gratitude, and elegance.

I’m inspired by beauty, people who do extraordinary things and devote their lives to making a difference. I’m a constant traveler. Africa makes you humble, these photos speak so much of who I am….

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

After my lovely session with Carrie, I couldn’t wait for her to call me back and share my two magic words. The I heard: “I think your style statement is Elegant Freedom.” Instantly, I knew it was me, my whole life I’ve been Elegant Freedom, I just never said it out loud. I was thrilled and excited. Totally makes sense. That’s me!!

It was ‘love at first sight’. From that moment my affair with elegance and freedom unfolded in every aspect of my life.

What was the first experience that reflected your Style Statement?

The very next day, when I woke up, I had a-ha moment. Suddenly it made sense why I felt so ‘out of air’ at my job. My compass was off; 20% of who I am wasn’t inspired. I realized why I wanted and needed to start my own business.

Is there a specific event, goal, or desire you’re applying your Style Statement to?

Yes!! My own business.

My very good friend and I are opening our own business and knowing our Style Statements helps us navigate our actions and reach results we desire. It also helps us understand and encourage one another on our journey.

What does your Style Statement mean to you? How do you interpret your first and second words?

It keeps me grounded and focused in order to be free. It provides an awareness of what works and what doesn’t work for me. It helps me navigate through every day without loosing a momentum. I now understand and embrace my need for independence and freedom in order to create results I desire.

Carrie emailed me this quote by French aviator, adventurer, and author, probably best known for his classic children’s book “The Little Prince”, who was also an aircraft designer, and I love it.

“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” This is perhaps the best definition of engineering elegance when he said.

Elegant: Elegant moves with grace. Uncomplicated. Refined. Ease. Poised. Direct without being forceful. Create power with simplicity.

Freedom: Ease of movement. Full access. Candidness. Free spirited. Natural. Independence.

What do you like to be noticed and appreciated for?

Creating change, kindness, wisdom.

What inspires you? How do you know when you’re inspired?

Love. People who make a difference. Knowledge. Books. Traveling. Nature. Animals. My partner. My dogs. My family. My sister. My friends. Beauty. Art. Museums.

I know I’m inspired when I’m fully immersed in the moment.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Comfy jeans with organic t-shirt a great pair of Fiorentini and Baker boots. Accessorized with a beautiful, elegant necklace, stud earrings, and ring. Would probably add a gorgeous scarf by Peace Treaty.

Five Books That Have Inspired You?

Le Petit Prince (every child should read this book).

Alchemist

Life of Pi

Hero with Thousand Faces

Eat, pray, love

10 Things that you love…

Chocolate. Elephants. My partner. My dogs. Pasta. Italy. Paris. Africa. Smell of fresh flowers. Traveling. Timeless elegance of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

You have $500 to spend on whatever you want. What would it be?

Ticket with a stop (for a few days) in Paris on route to Africa. ($500 wouldn’t be enough but would certainly help….)

I’ve started inviting myself into life.

I must admit, trying new things is sometimes scary. I have invited myself to achieve my goal of health and wellness. I feel more deserving, and putting myself first makes me feel more graceful, my true self. My husband has observed a calmer Catherine, and this has strengthened our relationship. I am slowly, sometimes with trepidation, stating what pleases me, inviting his help, asking him to massage my feet, my back; inviting him to sit with me on the couch; asking for what makes me happy. He’s thrilled that I am inviting him in! I had forgotten what a wonderful man I had married! I feel so married!

I find that instead of saying something critical, I try to find something positive amid the negative, the confusion, and the sadness life can bring. It sure makes for a far lovelier life and marriage. I feel that my authentic self is emerging at the age of fifty-four—clearly never too late! Graceful Invitation will be a lifelong journey for me.

Mary is energetic, as a wife, mom and stepmom. A true entrepreneurial spirit who enjoys a busy life, she loves the smell of the forest, a well-organised home, a clear concise ‘to-do list’, and helping people. Mary lives on Vancouver Island with her husband and two young boys.

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

After my Style Statement session I kept struggling with my words. At first I felt it was too plain for me, I wanted words with more pizazz. I liked the definitions but the words didn’t resonate with me. So, in order to get perspective, I spoke with someone close to me, who made a joke of my words. Feeling frustrated, I spoke to Carrie and we discussed my definitions further and the reasons why Simple Present is so me.

Simple Present helps me be my authentic self.

What does your Style Statement mean to you? How do you interpret your first and second words?

Simple Present – Tenacious and structured but loving and kind.

Simple is clean, structured, well-made, and classic. Simple is organized, practical, comfortable, and hearty.

Present is being in the moment. Letting go of the structure and deadlines I create for myself and giving myself the gift of living in the moment. Present is also a good reminder to allow myself to laugh and enjoy my children.

How has your Style Statement been useful to you? How do you apply it to your life?

My Style Statement helps me edit everything that’s not useful and helps me be organized every day. It’s so much easier to clean out my closest and organize my house. Simple Present helps me clarify what style of clothes suit my body and suit my lifestyle – a working mother with young children. I’m more efficient shopping for clothes which makes it less painful!

I now smile when there is cereal all over the floor and my youngest son sits with a bowl on his head. Simple Present also reminds me to see beauty in everyday things – taking pleasure in the present.

When are you at your best?

When things are energized; I’m working with a team and we’re organized and flowing. I love leading people, feel great when my team is present and working together to accomplish a common goal.

When do you hide? How can you your second word support you in those moments?

When I am around mean or toxic people.

Present reminds me to be in the moment, I’m a strong person and not allow people to treat me poorly.

What inspires you? How do you know when you’re inspired?

When I see something I really connect with – I know this immediately, I’m a very decisive. People who work hard and do well inspire me to work hard. When I’m inspired, I go for it, I’m an, “all or nothing woman.” I research things to the fullest and always do what I say I am going to do.

What do you like to be noticed and appreciated for?

My accomplishments and my hard work.

How do you play?

I play with my kids – laugh and run around. I love to be in nature. I’m learning to play more, my life has been focused on work too much – that’s why Present is so me!

What’s the best thing about having your Style Statement?

The clarity it brings.

Laura lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two children, simply and beautifully of course!

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

I feel like I have, “leaned into” my Style Statement. It was not love at first sight, I have slowly embraced it. I was so inspired by the book Style Statement, I immediately scheduled a consultation with Carrie. When I first heard my Style Statement I resisted. I consider myself very liberal and progressive and classic felt too traditional. Serenity seemed staid. Couldn’t I be sexy rock star? Alas, I soon realized it was spot on.

What does your Style Statement mean to you?

Classic means timeless, simple, elegant, refined and restrained.

Serenity mean peaceful, balanced, natural, harmonious and at one.

How has your Style Statement been useful to you? How do you apply it to your life?

Accepting my Style Statement has been useful. Despite fantasies of being a rock star- Classic is my foundation. Serenity is my ethereal self- the part that longs to come home and is devoted to the divine. I find owning my Style Statement helps me simplify. My Statement is a guide for choices, from buying clothes to choosing how I spend my time.

When are you at your best?

I am at my best when I am in love, grateful and inspired.

When do you hide/shrink? How can you your second word support you in those moments?

I shrink when I judge myself and get caught in a cycle of self doubt, perfectionism and questioning what has already happened. These moments are when I need my second word the most! I find my serenity again through meditation.

Where in the world do you feel most at home ? What do you collect?

I am most at home at home or in nature. My favorite places in nature are on a beach staring at the ocean or on a mountain top.

I like to keep my surroundings fairly white and minimal. I am not a big collector, although I do love books. There are a few items I am in love with at the moment: an old wooden bowl filled with round stones, my vases of shells, a piece of coral a friend gave me and my stones with intentions written on them.

If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I have two uniforms – jeans and a t-shirt or a little dress. That’s why I am Classic Serenity.

What inspires you? How do you know when you’re inspired?

When I am inspired I feel alive and connected. I am inspired by nature, my children, my work, beauty, simplicity, Reverend Michael Beckwith at Agape, green living, and delicious food made in the simplest way with few ingredients.

What do you like to be noticed and appreciated for?

Wisdom and kindness.

How do you play?

I clear clutter and organize. It’s true! When I was a kid I used to set up a laundry service for my family by my bedroom door. I would wrap everyone’s folded laundry in brown paper and wait for them to pick it up.

What’s the best thing about having your Style Statement?

It feels like a secret source of support residing in the center of my being. I guess not so much of a secret now!
