Style Statement Story | Catherine Diamond, Graceful Invitation

June 7th, 2011

I’ve started inviting myself into life.

I must admit, trying new things is sometimes scary. I have invited myself to achieve my goal of health and wellness. I feel more deserving, and putting myself first makes me feel more graceful, my true self. My husband has observed a calmer Catherine, and this has strengthened our relationship. I am slowly, sometimes with trepidation, stating what pleases me, inviting his help, asking him to massage my feet, my back; inviting him to sit with me on the couch; asking for what makes me happy. He’s thrilled that I am inviting him in! I had forgotten what a wonderful man I had married! I feel so married!

I find that instead of saying something critical, I try to find something positive amid the negative, the confusion, and the sadness life can bring. It sure makes for a far lovelier life and marriage. I feel that my authentic self is emerging at the age of fifty-four—clearly never too late! Graceful Invitation will be a lifelong journey for me.

Jessi Arrington: Wearing Nothing New

June 7th, 2011

“Designer Jessi Arrington packed nothing for TED but 7 pairs of undies, buying the rest of her clothes in thrift stores around LA. It’s a meditation on conscious consumption — wrapped in a rainbow of color.” I adore her creativity and exuberance, we can all apply her message to our own style.

ps – On my last Treasure Hunt I discovered mens English brogues and a mustard yellow  & brown straw bag. Total $20. Tip – I carried my wardrobe wish list for guidance – keeps me focused!

Guest Post | Parenting From the Hip or From the Heart?

June 2nd, 2011

I’m enthusiastically reflecting on my newly claimed Style Statement,  Timeless Feminine, and how it applies to parenting, especially since I have four children.

Words I’m marinading in are - philosophies, ideas, nurture, compassion, stories standing the test of time, considering what has come before and what is being created for the future, the importance of honouring spirituality and ability to sense the  truth of what’s happening.

I often use gardens as metaphors for raising children, like seeds full of possibility, we need to tend to them with the utmost care. We reap what we sow and remembering our intention for growing our garden, keeps us grounded. I am  in awe of how my children teach me and how rich my life  is with them. My youngest son reminded me of his wisdom last Christmas when he asked, “Mom, what’s your New Year’s Revelation?” My answer, “Nothing is as it seems.”

Before children, I judged mothers. Once, I saw a mother reprimanding her child in the grocery store for doing something wrong. I watched …judging. I know better now. Maybe it was low blood sugar, a lost soother, or mum got fired from her job.

Who was I to judge?

As a mother I have my  “moments,” but with less judgement. I don’t have all the answers and I’ve made mistakes. I do know when I parent from a place of authenticity, I  parent from my heart. When I parent from my hip it’s reactionary and ego driven, it serves me more than my child. When we take a deep breath, are mindful, we parent with acceptance. What works for me, may not work for you – that’s why parenting styles are as individual as our  Style Statements. When we live from our essence we feel real, at home, and who knows who we inspire.

Style | Structured Magic

June 1st, 2011

This is the stunning home of my dear friend Kim: photographer extraordinaire, spiritual sister and magic maker. She is shrewd business woman with crazy creativity. Her Style Statement is Structured Magic. With a jazz of energy, ideas, and passion there needs to be structure. Kim’s shazam and pizzaz rests on solid grid lines.

Structured is, “sturdy, solid, tailored, attention to detail, well-engineered, ordered, and tidy.” The softness and crispness is so meditative (did I tell you mediation changed her life, magical) and the burst of lilac, blue and graphic is charming.

Note, the clever and gorgeous lilac floral arrangement, the contasting dark wood floors and framed art work to ground the room. Ahhh, don’t you want to move in?

Style Statement Stories | Mary Delury, Simple Present

May 29th, 2011

Mary is energetic, as a wife, mom and stepmom.  A true entrepreneurial spirit who enjoys a busy life, she loves the smell of the forest, a well-organised home, a clear concise ‘to-do list’, and helping people.  Mary lives on Vancouver Island with her husband and two young boys.

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

After my Style Statement session I kept struggling with my words. At first I felt it was too plain for me, I wanted words with more pizazz. I  liked the definitions but the words didn’t resonate with me. So, in order to get perspective, I spoke with someone close to me, who made a joke of my words. Feeling frustrated, I spoke to Carrie and we discussed my definitions further and the reasons why Simple Present is so me.

Simple Present helps me be my authentic self.

What does your Style Statement mean to you? How do you interpret your first and second words?

Simple Present – Tenacious and structured but loving and kind.

Simple is clean, structured, well-made, and classic. Simple is organized, practical, comfortable, and hearty.

Present is being in the moment. Letting go of the structure and deadlines I create for myself and giving myself the gift of living in the moment. Present is also a good reminder to allow myself  to laugh and enjoy my children. Read the rest of this entry »

Style Statement Collage | Traditional

May 26th, 2011

Traditional

Spirit: Traditional gets tremendous joy from nourishing a sense of community and family, whether within a neighborhood, group, organization, or among family members and friends. They are curious and learn from what has come before, especially anything pertaining to time-honored orthodox doctrines and practices. Traditional is keenly interested in finding the best way to do something. What has worked in the past? and What will work now and in the future? are their guiding questions. And when they find something that works, they happily dispense advice, and share best finds, how-tos, and personal learning. If they can’t find an established way of doing something that works for them, Traditional will create their own customs, routines, or rituals and ultimately legacies. They build things to last—relationships, creative works, a sense of home and place, policies, products—and they hang in there. Traditional typically has a strong personal sense of right and wrong, which at times can cause rigidity. At their best, Traditional is actively curious about the perspectives and creations of other cultures.

Style Statement Stories | Laura Forbes Carlin, Classic Serenity

May 24th, 2011

On her inspiring, informative and beautiful blog, Inspired Everyday Living, Laura writes how simple changes in your home can transform your life.  She is also the co-author of, The Peaceful Nursery: Preparing a Home for your Baby and Love at Home: the Single Girl’s Guide to Feng Shui and Life Design. Laura lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two children, simply and beautifully of course!

How did you arrive at your Style Statement?

I feel like I have, “leaned into” my Style Statement. It was not love at first sight, I have slowly embraced it.  I was so inspired by the book Style Statement,  I immediately scheduled a consultation with Carrie.  When I first heard my Style Statement I resisted.  I consider myself very liberal and progressive and classic felt too traditional. Serenity seemed staid. Couldn’t I be sexy rock star?  Alas, I soon realized it was spot on. Read the rest of this entry »
