Happy Happy New Year | Choose a Word

January 4th, 2011

Pick a word, but not just any word…CLARITY. HARVEST. COURAGE. PASSION. CREATE. Words have layers, history and power.

In the right combination, with certain intent, words are a magic formula (like a Style Statement.)

This year I chose a word with my husband. We wanted a declaration to soften the sandpapery times, the power struggle times. We chose the word unity.  In moments of frustration I pause, he pauses and  we move towards each other, less righteousness more harmony. (Yes, I know it’s only January 3rd but unity is making a difference for us)

Choose your words for the year—one or two gems to plug into your heart. Take your time. Meditate or doodle. Sometimes you need to claim your word like a brass ring of promise, other times it will float into your mind and feel just right when it gets there.

Every word is a song unto itself. Let your words move your life forward.

  1. I’m still trying out my word and theme for 2011.

I’ve been at a new “job” since March of last year, and although I was hired for my entrepreneurial background in addition to my experience, the two people responsible for choosing me are now completely out of the picture. The new folks? Way different in mindset, practices, and, well, heart. I’m weighing how long I’m supposed to/want to stay (to finish well those editorial promises I have in the pot and to leave on my own terms instead of feeling as though I’m giving up too quickly) versus seeing my spirit, energy, and expertise squashed. Also in the mix is that the work I left after 15 years (at Whitline with my hubby) isn’t there waiting to welcome me back (hubby is — but not the work and pay).

With Whitline, I partnered with corporations, companies, and individuals … and that’s how I went into this new situation: “I’m an equal partner with expertise and wisdom to offer.” It was a reciprocal relationship where all parties valued one another. With the new folks in control, I am NOT an equal, I am a little employee … what a rude awakening! :-)

I suppose I’m rambling on because I’m having trouble thinking of my word other than “transitions,” which I don’t want to claim for a whole year. (I’d take that one for the first quarter, but don’t like how it feels setting up 2011 with an in flux sort of word. Far too unsettled to have that for the year.)

I love your word UNITY. It actually fits so well not only personally but also when we apply it to business. (That’s another thing lacking at my little corporate job. There is SO much toxicity and negativity.) Unity allows us to experience harmony, too, and then because we’re on the same “page,” it has to be much easier to create synergy and momentum — we’re working together instead of struggling or being oppositional or just existing in our own little workaday orbits.

So, I am struggling with what my word is supposed to be…but it’s a good exercise and I hope for one to land softly in my mind soon.

Happy 2011 to you and yours!
