Friday Focus | Get Rid of It

Here’s a radical notion: What if you really liked, even outright adored, every material thing in your own life? What if the quality, shape, color, function, and feel of everything you owned gave you satisfaction, pride, and delight?

Often, people hold on to futons and tired old chairs long after their university days have passed. “Well, we hate it,” they say, “but we really need it.” Get rid of it.

When you let go of things you don’t love you create space for things that you do love to show up. If you don’t like something in your space, it’s dragging you down. This is about how stuff makes you feel.

Satisfaction and delight feel just right.

IDEA: Identify the “old chairs” in your life that you’re making do with and get rid of them. You may have to sit on floor cushions for a while, but you’ll be dwelling in possibility instead of compromise and regret.

  1. I love the idea of loving everything I own. That’s why I go through my stuff once in a while and purge everything that isn’t essential to me.

  2. I have to adopt the “get rid of it” policy in regards to clothes. I get a lot of regret that I spent the money on certain items but if it has been in there for a year and I haven’t touched it? Out it goes!

    • Editing your wardrobe creates ease in your life and makes room for what you really love, here’s to feeling and looking great!

  3. This is true for virtually every aspect of life. A house — or life — overstuffed can be difficult to deal with on a daily basis. Getting rid of/letting go of outdated items (or ideas!) isn’t just liberating; as you mentioned, it allows physical and mental space for other (better) things.

  4. Love Emily-Sarah’s spin on this … so refreshing.

  5. How timely. I’ve been busy purging old office furniture as I create a new office/writing space for myself. Last week I kept thinking about Carrie’s advice, going way back to my SS session a few years ago, to keep only the things I love, and to buy new things only if I love them. I vowed to spend the next few months ‘unshopping’ my home – going through every room to remove that which I don’t love, or that which does not resonate with my style statement. Now I have a new motto for this process: Get rid of it!
