Friday Focus | Take the Compliment

April 22nd, 2010

Gratitude is the most exquisite form of courtesy.
~ Jacques Maritain

Who doesn’t want acknowledgment for a job well done, fabulous hair, good intentions, or great style? Yet we often unconsciously deflect the praise that could nourish our deepest cravings.

If and when you are complimented, receive it. Stand in the place where you are seen. Let it be all about you for a moment. Say thank you. A smile and a nod will do.

Set out to compliment as many people as you can, including strangers. There are endless reasons to give out compliments, from providing good service to standing by your side through tough times. No matter how the recipient reacts, whether graciously or awkwardly, let it be. A smile and a nod will do.

Compliment yourself. Do it right now, before you head out to compliment the world around you. Think of a few great things about yourself and receive your own praise graciously. A smile and a nod will do.

A compliment is a gift, thank you very much.

  1. Yes, yes! Accept the compliment without the “Oh, it’s nothing” or “Oh, this old thing?” Take — and give — compliments sincerely and often.

A friend of mine, several years ago, actually commented on a public conversation my hubby and I had. He’d complimented me on something and I’d replied, “Thank you, Sweetie!” The friend said, “Wow, I wish my wife would take compliments like that. She always downplays her gifts and talents. She never lets me sing her praises.”

Receiving a compliment well is a gift for us AND for the giver of those kind words.

Thank YOU, Carrie, for giving hope and style and authenticity to us. You’re a wonderful role model. xoxo
