Tips | Spring Shopping

March 24th, 2010

Fashion fades. Only style remains.

–Coco Chanel

As spring ignites our senses and makes everything feel new again, we naturally feel the urge to go shopping and freshen our look. A flouncy, flirty dress … a sheer, sensuous blouse … a bright organic tee … the possibilities beckon. As much fun as this is, you’ll thank yourself later if you resist impulse buys born in excitement, and think carefully about what you want to look and feel like this spring and summer.

My advice? Sit down with the latest issues of your favorite style magazines before you shop and create an on-the-fly ideas book. You’ll get a read on what’s current, and you’ll also get the time you need to consider whether a trend really suits you.

As you head out to shop (armed with your book), mark the occasion with a little treat: a pedicure, a blow-out, or just an indulgent fancy coffee. Walk into quality stores feeling beautiful and confident, and look for things that you’ve already admired in your magazines. Of course you’ll be surprised by items you haven’t come across yet and which will look fantastic on you (and what’s shopping without the thrill of surprise!) but you’ll also be looking for specific ideas you’ve already researched. The balance of spontaneity and planning will make for a happy excursion — and also a happy closet.

Welcome to spring!

p.s. Did Chanel nail it or did she nail it in that quote above? Wow. Always impressed by brief and genius eloquence.
